Robbery and profanation in the Church of Basuregady

Nov 29, 2009 | Ecclesiastical News, JPIC

India. In the night of last October 25 the church of Basuregady (Andra Pradesh), attended by the Claretian Missionaries, was desecrated and many corners destroyed by some antisocial elements. Early morning the members of the community and the faithful received the news with unpleasant surprise. The Church was found open, the racks of the Church, broken and the tabernacle without the Blessed Sacrament. After a long search, the tabernacle and the Blessed Sacrament appeared in a nearby field. Some boxes from the entrance and computer materials of the church had been taken away. The ecclesiastical authorities were informed as well as the police who went to initiate the investigation. Meanwhile, the faithful together with Frs. Rajashekar Reddy and others of the parish, were able to recover the Blessed Sacrament. It was inferred that the main motive was the robbery, not a desecration for religious fanaticism.
