Rome. In the afternoon of Monday 7, Pope Benedict XVI presided over a celebration of the Word in the Basilica of Saint Bartholomew, in the Tiber Island of Rome, in memory of the Witnesses of Faith of the XX and XXI centuries, in the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the Community of Saint Egidio. Pope John Paul II entrusted the said memory to the Community of Saint Egidio 15 years ago, and established that the memory of the new martyrs should be kept.
At the request of the said Community, the Congregation of the Claretian Missionaries have given for the above mentioned Basilica a medal and a relic of the Blessed Claretian Martyr of Mexico, Andrew Solá. The relic was presented to the Holy Father and deposited on the altar of the martyrs of Latin America.
