Floods in Sri Lanka

Dec 22, 2012 | St. Joseph Vaz

Kurunegala, Sri Lanka. The adverse whether especially the continuous heavy shower without either thunder and lightning or strong wind, from 16th night to till now , has made the most impacts to kurunegala according to the news.

And so the heavy shower, in and around Geppallawa and Uhumeeya, damaged lots of properties and blocked the transport through main roads and the interior roads.

Casa St. Claret, our Novitiate, accommodated with three priests, six Novices and four minor staff and surrounded by many streams, is not affected directly, but two of our drinking water wells and an electric motor are under water. It is very difficult to remove it as the speed and the pulling of the water in the stream is fast and the level of the water is up to 50 to 60 feet.

The neighboring houses of two situated near the streams are fully under the water and the chicken farm (poultry) opposite to our Novitiate has been damaged severely and as a result lost some 7000 chicken.
We went to help and show our solidarity and concern at this time of trial and tragedy. We also provided some meal parcels to those who are unable to prepare their meal.

Now the rain is stopped and it takes more than 5 hours for the water to run away and go down. We are not affected and thank God also for the grace showered during the completion of the building construction. We are little worried about our neighbors who have been affected. Hope to help them physically soon after the stop of rain.

Srilanka_Inundation2Our novices and the master expressed sincere thanks for all your care, concern, solidarity and prayers. Hope to see you all on the 22nd for the reopening ceremony of the Casa St. Claret.
