India. On the 13th of December our Claretian brother Fr. Joy Sebastian, of the Delegation of Northeast India, was liberated. Fr. Joy had been imprisoned on November 3 due to the suicide of one of the students in the residence of the Claret School of Guwahati. The circumstances of the suicide are not known, but the family and other neighbours of the village accused Fr. Joy Sebastian of lack of vigilance and attributed to him, as director of the residence, a certain responsibility in the suicide of the boy. The police immediately arrested him without any investigation and the judicial authority decreed his transfer to the prison of Guwahati. Everything seems to indicate that in the background of the sad death of the boy there are circumstances linked to conflicts between groups of the zone, in which the family of this boy have been involved for several years. From the first moment all kinds of arrangements were made to obtain the freedom of Fr. Joy, since it was clear that he is totally unrelated to this sad event. In fact, the day that the suicide took place Fr. Joy was rendering pastoral services outside of the community. Thanks to God, today he has been placed on probation after so many days of sufferings. The brothers in the Congregation have always been very near him in our prayer and are happy that he has recovered his freedom. We commend the deceased boy to the merciful love of the Lord and we pray for his family.
