Another Kind of Tourism

Dec 29, 2011 | Mission Procure, Santiago, Solidarity & Mission

Madrid, Spain. PROCLADE (Promoción Claretiana para el Desarrollo), of the Province of Santiago, has developed an initiative for tourism promotion together with WATINA TOURS.

“Wátina” is a Garífuna word (of the descendents of African slaves who inhabit regions of the Caribbean) which signifies “called” or “vocation” and is used as a collective call to the People to do something about a situation or a problem.

This project, in cooperation with several communities from countries in Asia, Latin America, and Africa, is a desire to respond to the demand for an ethical, united and responsible global economy which finds in tourism one of the most powerful engines of development and a means to promote a real alternative of trade, consumption and human promotion.

The initiative has two aspects:
1. Projects of touristic and socioeconomic development to help the communities and the Claretian Missionaries who accompany them in the battle to defend land, dignity and life through integral projects of social and economic development (training, microcredits…)
2. Tourist travel agency in charge to promote the encounter between people and different cultures and religions through respect and interchange; offering the citizens ethics and solidarity, an alternative from leisure and consumerism.

With this answer to the call, “Watina” and PROCLADE invite you to build this another world free of prejudice, in which people are supported and valued. A world of decent work, for the protection of the environment, cultural richness, where people are the real protagonists.
