Casaldàliga: Were I to be born again, I would be Claretian

Feb 22, 2008 | Brothers, Cardinals and Bishops

Spain. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, the Bishop Emeritus of Sao Félix do Araguaia (Brazil), Pedro Casaldàliga, is being the object of homages, interviews and headlines in communications media. The Claretian media also, this web page included, have wanted to offer their fraternal homage with the congratulatory letter of Fr. General. We copy a few words taken from the Diario de Mallorca (Mallorca’s daily): “Casaldàliga states that were he to be born again, ‘I would again be missionary and Claretian,’ and that he would try to go the Third World. ‘My dream was to go to Africa, but my health made me stay put here’, he complains. The missionary also confesses that ‘I would try to be more in solidarity with the poor’ and that he would try ‘demand more’ from himself and from the Church. ‘We have spent years suffering and making others suffer, sometimes in the name of the Gospel’, he admits. The Gospel, he explains, ‘is a good news; it is never a bad news’, he asserts. ‘I hope that God will remake what we have not done well’”.
