New Mission in Uganda opened

Sep 12, 2009 | St. Charles Lwanga

Uganda. With the opening of the new mission of the Claretians in Uganda, St. Charles and Matia Parish Kattukuru, the long awaited dream of the catholic community of Kattukuru came true on Sunday 6th September 2009 as his Grace Arch Bishop Paul Bakyenga raised this energetic sub-parish into a parish. He installed Fr. Joy and Fr. Bernard as parish priest and assistant parish priest respectively.

Kattukuru is in the Arch-diocese of Mbarara situated in the western part of Uganda approximately 270 km form the capital city, Kampala. To this day it was part of the Cathedral parish of the Archdiocese. This is the second mission of the Claretians in the Arch diocese, first one being that of Nyabwina.

According the brief history, that was read during the Holy Mass, the people of this place were requesting for a parish from 1985. There is one family who was instrumental in making all this happen, the family of Mr. Francis Mwebisa. His father donated the land for the church and in his last will and testimony, he mandated his son to extend all possible assistance to see that this community is being raised to a parish. He also took the leading role in building the presbytery and also in arranging the function on Sunday, September 6th. The entire catholic community was so happy to see that the missionaries have come to fulfill their long cherished dream.

The main task of this new Claretian venture is the pastoral care of the catholic community of this area who are spread out in 10 sub parishes. The Arch Bishop, his Grace Paul Bakeynga in his homily clearly stated that the reason behind establishing a parish here is to bring the sacraments closer to the young people especially to the school children.
