“Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament is our moral and physical life. Moral, which consists in knowing and loving, and the object and nourishment of understanding is the truth, and Jesus Christ is the same essential truth, and the object and nourishment of the will is goodness, and Jesus Christ is goodness and charity in essence.”
Carta ascética… al presidente de uno de los coros de la Academia de San Miguel. Barcelona 1862, p. 27

JESUS GIVES UNDERSTANDING AND LOVE

If there is anything that human beings ardently desire it is life in its fullness and the truth that leads to the liberty of the children of God. The saints knew this very well and ran right to the source of truth and life. This spring is found hidden in the Eucharist which is the sacrament of love. Truth and life are like two rails on which runs the train of every Christian life. ‘Jesus Christ’, said Claret, ‘is goodness and charity in essence.’
If we want our understanding to be fed from the wisdom of the Gospel, and our love of God and of our brothers and sisters to have the heat of the Spirit’s living flame which is also given to us, with the Father and Son, in the Eucharistic communion, let us be constant in receiving this sacrament, a treasure where grace is abundant and that cleans, heals and invigorates everything.
Deep down, we know God loves us and we love him in the measure in which we know him. This vital understanding is achieved through ‘contact’ with Him, in the person of Jesus, the accessible God by his incarnation and closeness for having shared our human condition. This contact is made sublime in communion, where the ties of love between Jesus and ourselves are made into an unbreakable and eternal bond now in the temporality of our life, in our limited years, but with the profile of eternity.
How beautiful and profound are these words of Claret, born from his personal experience: ‘Jesus Christ is the same essential truth, and the object and nourishment of the will is goodness, and Jesus Christ is goodness and charity in essence.’ Reread and meditate on this text. If you apply it to your life, it will surely do you much good.
